Jewish Civics Initiative: Bridges Outreach

October 23, 2007

This Sunday, October 28, 2007, the Jewish Civics Initiative Group will be doing a “run” for Bridges Outreach.  During a “run” participants go out into the streets of Irvington and meet with the homeless.  Our group will be handing out bagged lunches, clothing, and toiletry items.

The JCI group will meet in The Partnership offices at the Aidekman Family Campus on 901 Route 10, Whippany, NJ at 9:30AM on Sunday, October 28, 2007.  The group will be back at Whippany at 2:30.  Each student should have a Central Hebrew High School permission waiver, and a Bridges Release Form: all three must be signed by a parent (the Bridges Release is in two parts):

Bagged lunches will be prepared the night before, at Conregation Beth Hatikvah 36 Chatham Road, Summit, NJ.  Some of the food for the run was donated by Whole Foods in Millburn, NJ.  This program was coordinated by The Partnership for Jewish Learning and Life of MetroWest, NJ.

Donate your “free matza with puchase.”

March 28, 2007

Yesterday I did another round of shopping for the passover holiday.  At the supermarket they had a coupon for a free 5lb package of matza when you spend $75.  I knew that I already had about 20lbs of matza in the house, but decided to take the free matza anyways.  I reasoned that there must be someone out there who doesn’t have access to free matza and would probably benefit from it more than I do.

So when I got into the office I got in touch with the Bobrow Kosher Food Pantry located at Congregation Oheb Shalom in South Orange.  I asked Marci Silbert (marci@silberts.com)  if the Food Pantry could use another 5-10lbs of matza.  She told me the following:

  1. The Food Pantry will definately take any matza that you’re not using.
  2. If you still haven’t cleaned for passover and need to get rid of some of your dry goods chametz, you can drop it off at the Food Pantry and they will store it for use after passover.
  3. If you end up with left over passover food, you can drop that off as well.

The Bobrow Kosher Food Pantry is located at Congregation Oheb Shalom 170 Scotland Road, South Orange, NJ 07079.  The usual hours of operation (when you can drop off food) are 9:00AM to 4:00PM Monday through Thursday, and 9:00AM until 2:00PM on Fridays.  When you get there look for Fran or call her in advance at 973-762-7067 and tell her you’re coming, and let her know who you are so she knows who to thank.
